When you plan for camping trips, slumber parties, and out-of-city visits, an air mattress is essential. But it can become useless due to some reason such as temperature fluctuations or no and off at night etc. One of the primary reasons is a small pin-sized hole. Disposing of this inflatable air mattress will waste a lot of money.
But you will be happy to know that you can repair a pesky leak effectively. The supplies you need to fix the hole may be already available in your home. In this way, you can patch an air mattress at your home by yourself. But how can you do it? Don't wonder about it. We are here to help you.
How can you patch an air mattress?
When a leak or hole is a culprit of your air mattress, take action quickly. The reason is that the hole will grow large, and repairing becomes harder if you used a damaged mattress. To patch an air mattress, follow the steps given below.
Step 1: Apply pressure on the mattress and listen to whistling air leakage:
To spot a hole in an air mattress, apply gentle pressure on the mattress with your hand and start listening. Now inflate the mattress and continue listening to the hissing sound from the bottom of a mattress.
Do not lie over the mattress while listening, as it can make the hole large. When you find a hole, trace it by permanent marker.
Step 2: Clean surface around the hole:
Now, clean a small area of an inch or more around the hole. Beyond it, you will place your patch with a dilute cleaner. Dry this area completely using a dry rag. Sand gently with sandpaper and also clean this sanded area. It will provide an even and smooth surface to the gum or glue for bonding.
Step 3: Use mattress kit and strong sealant to patch air mattress:
If a patch kit came with an air mattress, use it to seal the leak by following the given directions. You can also purchase the kit from hardware shops or online. The alternate to this kit is using a bicycle tire repair kit.
Firstly, cut the patch a half-inch larger than the leak. Now, apply glue or any other adhesive gently on the patch, especially in the middle area. Some important adhesives used for this purpose include gorilla glue, super glue, and contact cement, etc.
Step 4: Make sure adhesive adheres completely:
In this step, patch your air mattress with a sticky part of the plastic. Press it down firmly and rub in a circular motion to finish all air bubbles. Be sure that there is a tight seal between the air mattress and patch. Finally, put a bit of talc or some baby powder on the patch mattress. When this powder stays on the patched surface, be happy because you have successfully patched the air mattress.
Final Thoughts:
Many people think that patching an air mattress is a difficult task. They contact professionals and manufacturers to repair their mattresses. In this way, they waste their money willingly. But literally, patching up the mattress is such an easy task that you can do it by yourself at home. So we suggest you save money by following the steps mentioned above.
